Christopher Gabriel program interview

April 20, 2010

I just appeared on a wonderful program on WDAY in Fargo ND with Christopher Gabriel.  He is an amazingly well rounded and knowledgeable guy with a great show!  You can stream it online like I do from here in LA!

  1. Sammy, that is very kind of you to say. However, for all the fans you have who might read this, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what I told you at your Drum Clinic at Concordia’s Day of Percussion: Though you are an utterly remarkable drummer – the best I’ve heard in person, and I’ve heard a LOT – that talent, style and skill is both matched and exceeded by what you bring to the table as a person.

The things you said to the young people, and their parents, in attendance at the clinic spoke volumes about you. The way you spoke about your parents, so reverentially… explaining to the kids without ever preaching that the journey to accomplish a dream / goal is what needs to be focused on… that doing things the right way – in essence, respecting the art, the business and one’s peers – is paramount… and never taking anything for granted, especially one’s own talent…

If only you could have heard what folks were saying as they left the auditorioum. Suffice it to say, like them I felt privileged to spend the time watching, listening and learning from you. The latter, and like you understand only too well – the only way to continue to grow as a person and as a professional is to remain open to possibilities. Or to tie it into something you said – you never know where inspiration will come from…

On Saturday, April 17, 2010, mine came from Sammy K.
